I am a theoretical physicist working on understanding the fundamental structure of the Universe. I want to understand how inflation, dark energy and dark matter can arise from a fundamental theory of gravity, and how cosmological data and gravitational waves can put those theories to the test.

About

My research focuses on understanding the fundamental structure of the Universe. I want to understand the origin and evolution of the Universe and some of its biggest mysteries: what drove the accelerated expansion of the very early Universe (inflation), what drives the acceleration we see today (dark energy), and what dark matter is. My aim is to understand how these phenomena can be explained by a fundamental theory of gravity such as string theory.

I also want to find out whether, and how, such fundamental theories can be tested with the latest observations. That means cosmological data, and also gravitational waves, especially those of primordial origin. These will become accessible in the coming years with LISA (the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) and the Einstein Telescope, and pulsar timing arrays such as NANOGrav are already probing them. To get there I use analytic and numerical techniques and, more recently, machine learning.

Collaborations

Research

From string theory to observations String theory at the top feeds three cosmological puzzles: inflation, dark matter and dark energy, placed along cosmic time. These connect to observations: gravitational waves from pulsar timing arrays, LISA and the Einstein Telescope, and cosmological data from the CMB, galaxy surveys and supernovae. String theory extra dimensions · branes and fluxes · moduli · axions · symmetries Inflation multifield, in the first instant Dark matter most of the matter in the Universe Dark energy acceleration today cosmic time ≈ 10⁻³⁶ s today, 13.8 Gyr primordial GWs, PBHs CMB imprints expansion history Gravitational waves Pulsar timing arrays LISA Einstein Telescope nanohertz millihertz hertz frequency Cosmological data Cosmic microwave background Galaxy surveys (DESI, Euclid) Supernovae Tools: analytic · numerical · machine learning and Bayesian inference
How my work fits together: string theory sets the possible dynamics of the early and late Universe, and gravitational waves and cosmological data decide which of them nature chose.

Opening doors to physics

Making physics open to everyone matters to me. I am proud to supervise Eleanna Kolonia, the first Bell Burnell Graduate Scholar in Swansea Physics. The scholarship, created by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell through the Institute of Physics, supports PhD students from groups that are under-represented in physics.

Join us

We welcome PhD students, postdocs and visitors who want to work on string cosmology, string phenomenology, dark energy or gravitational waves. When we have funded positions in the Cosmology & Gravity @ Swansea group we advertise them on INSPIRE Jobs.

We are also glad to host researchers who bring their own funding, and to help strong candidates prepare fellowship applications with Swansea as host. Get in touch early, ideally a few months before the deadline.

Beyond physics

Outside physics you will often find me upside down: in a gym in Swansea, or anywhere with a bar to hang from, airports included. Gymnastics has been my passion for as long as I can remember; physics, maths and science joined it a little later, as I started to discover how the world works. I train at the Swansea Gymnastics Club and defy gravity at the Buzz Trampoline Park in Swansea.

If you are new to Swansea and also enjoy flips and handstands, feel free to come and talk to me.
